Creativity is about choices
This is an interesting thought i had recently. i always looked at creative people kinda in awe, like you just got “it”. “it” being a gift from god to be able to make something from nothing. it always felt so out of reach for me. like there was nothing that i could do to achieve that level of creativity. a tool that wasnt in my toolbox.
but i’m learning that creativity is simply an expression of your identity.
how you see things.
how you hear things.
how you experience things.
what is the output of that?
however you interpret things and decide to translate it, is creativity.
just like the way you tell a story. you and i wont tell the same story the same and thats okay because its meant to be that way.
the more you dive into interpretation of experiences, the more refined it will become.
for example - when i hear music, i see a visual in my head. so the input (music), is interpreted by me in visuals, so the output would be a video (creativity).
obviously this isnt the case for everyone, and even if it was, we would still see different things. and if we decide/choose to express what we got from that experience, that is creativity.
hope that makes sense.
now when it comes to executing on creativity, there are technical skills that you develop over time by simply creating.
the way you see it in your head and the way it comes to life/is expressed may be a bit different. thats because there usually is a gap between what we see in our head vs what you can actually do. the goal is to continue to create until you are able to make what you see in your head come to life exactly how you envisioned it. those are the things that you need to add to your toolkit. creativity is something we all have, now wether or not we decide to act on it is up to us.
creating is meant to be a deeply personal thing. back to the idea of choices.
a photographer deciding to shoot from a specific angle, with specific lighting, of a specific subject is a way to get to know that person. what choices do you notice they made? would you have done it differently? wether yes or no, make sure you know why. BECAUSE THAT IS what is supposed to be coming from you. its the series of choices that someone makes, intentionally or simply by intuition at times, that makes it unique to their expression.
when someone shares a creative project or body of work they are sharing a part of themselves. how they see the world. its about sharing a perspective that sometimes we cant put into words. and its a framework we can use to better understand one another. before we assume anything, its important to ask why someone made the decisions they made.
the better we understand each others choices and the more we express our creativity the better we will understand each other.
